Waste treatment: analysis of media communications (press releases between 10/95 and 03/96).

In the framework of a national media communication survey concerning the waste treatment sector, a status report has been realized in order to help develop communication strategies. The study was based on a corpus composed of 1250 articles related to waste treatment and found in the general and specialized press, and covering a six month period (end of 1995 - 1996). The newspaper articles were largely factual both in the general and the specialized press. Predominantly negative articles amounted to an extremely small proportion of the publications, dealing essentially with legislation and the slowness of the government and relevant organizations in reducing pollution. Regarding subject matters, media communications can be split into three main areas: the effects of treatment, legislation and technology, mainly for raising public and industrial awareness concerning the various processing methods and explaining their respective advantages, frequently based on economic and ecological values
