Experimental study of H(sup -) ion detachment on thin gas targets

A ribbon-like beam and slitting system of secondary particle detection were used in experiments on H(sup -)ion detachment in the energy range of E(sub H)(sup -)=10-300 keV at different gas targets. The influence of this geometry of the experiment on the measurement of the particle angular distributions is studied by numerical simulation. In the analysis of the registered distributions of H(sup 0) atoms in elementary acts of H(sup -) ion detachment and the character of this interaction is analyzed. It is shown that the maximum accuracy of the coincidence of the angular distributions of H(sup -) ions and H(sup 0) atoms in the beam with the energy of E(sub H)(sup -)(>=)10 keV is defined by expression of G(sub 0)(rad)=3x10(sup -2) / (radical)E(sub H)-(eV). Taking into account the correlation of (Delta)E(sub 0)/E(sub H)(sup -)=(2-2.5) G(sub 0) for width at half-maximum of H(sup 0) atom distributions on energy, the obtained dependence of G(sub 0)E(sub H)(sup -) can be used to solve the tasks of diagnostics of H(sup -) ion beams by means of H(sup 0) atoms. 31 refs., 7 figs.
