Vapor pressures and heats of vaporization of primary coal tars

This project had as its main focus the determination of vapor pressures of coal211u001epyrolysis tars. It involved performing measurements of these vapor pressures and 211u001efrom them, developing vapor pressure correlations suitable for use in advanced 211u001epyrolysis models (those models which explicitly account for mass transport 211u001elimitations). This report is divided into five main chapters. Each chapter is a 211u001erelatively stand-alone section. Chapter A reviews the general nature of coal tars 211u001eand gives a summary of existing vapor pressure correlations for coal tars and 211u001emodel compounds. Chapter B summarizes the main experimental approaches for coal 211u001etar preparation and characterization which have been used throughout the project. 211u001eChapter C is concerned with the selection of the model compounds for coal 211u001epyrolysis tars and reviews the data available to us on the vapor pressures of 211u001ehigh boiling point aromatic compounds. This chapter also deals with the question 211u001eof identifying factors that govern the vapor pressures of coal tar model 211u001ematerials and their mixtures. Chapter D covers the vapor pressures and heats of 211u001evaporization of primary cellulose tars. Chapter E discusses the results of the 211u001emain focus of this study. In summary, this work provides improved understanding 211u001eof the volatility of coal and cellulose pyrolysis tars. It has resulted in new 211u001eexperimentally verified vapor pressure correlations for use in pyrolysis models. 211u001eFurther research on this topic should aim at developing general vapor pressure 211u001ecorrelations for all coal tars, based on their molecular weight together with 211u001ecertain specific chemical characteristics i.e. hydroxyl group content.
