The effects of various fuel and air impurities on the performance of tubular211u001esolid oxide fuel cells have been examined. Two-cell SOFC tests were conducted 211u001eusing simulated coal gas contaminated with 1 ppm H(sub 2)S, 1 ppm HCl, and 5000 211u001eppm NH(sub 3). Of these only H(sub 2)S was found to have a significant effect. 211u001eAnother two-cell test was conducted in which the effect of SiO(sub 2) carryover 211u001einto fuel electrode was examined. Testing was also conducted to investigate the 211u001eeffects of copper on nickel containing cell components. Three different air 211u001eimpurities were examined. Single cell testing was performed using air 211u001econtaminated with sulfur dioxide, with extremely high levels of water vapor, with 211u001ewater vapor and sulfur dioxide, and with sea water mist.
