Aircraft crashes are an element of external events required to be analyzed and211u001edocumented in Facility Safety Analysis Reports (SARs) and Nuclear Explosive 211u001eSafety Studies (NESS). Aircraft crashes into DOE facilities are of concern due to 211u001eeffects related to impact and fire that can potentially lead to penetration of 211u001ethe facility, disruption of operations, and the potential release of radioactive 211u001eand/or hazardous materials subsequent to the aircraft impact. This paper 211u001ediscusses the review and analysis of aircraft crash hit frequency on the Device 211u001eAssembly Facility (DAF) within the Nevada Test Site (NTS). The frequency of an 211u001eaircraft crashing and hitting the DAF is in the 1 E-7 to E-8 range. While this is 211u001econsidered to be acceptably small, it is not considered an upper bound. The 211u001eresults of the analysis are highly dependent on the assumptions made and the 211u001eavailable data. There is considerable uncertainty in the number of overflights 211u001ewhich are taking place over the NTS. To reduce this uncertainty, additional 211u001efollow-on work will be done to monitor the level of air activity over the NTS and 211u001eto recalculate the aircraft crash hit frequency on the DAF when better overflight 211u001eestimates are obtained.
