A major development effort was undertaken at Cerarnatec to increase the sodium211u001etransport rates and transport efficiency of NaSICON membranes for recycling 211u001esodium sulfate. A novel NaSICON composition (NAS-D) and its doped versions were 211u001edeveloped that exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion in acid and alkaline 211u001eelectrolytes. The NAS-D based membranes show exceptionally high sodium transport 211u001eefficiency (less than 92 Yo) in caustic for over 5000 hours of operation. While 211u001ethe chemical stability in acid was excellent, there is a need to arrest the ion 211u001eexchange of H+ or H(sub 3)0+ for Na+ ions at the monolayer of the NaSICON 211u001emembranes in acidic anolyte (pH less than 4) in order to make them viable for 211u001ecommercial electrochemical application such as recycling of sodium sulfate.
