In February 1997, under the auspices of the Product Realization Program, an211u001einitiative to develop performance models for lithium/manganese dioxide-based 211u001ebatteries began. As a part of this initiative, the performance characteristics of 211u001ethe cells under a variety of conditions were determined, both for model 211u001edevelopment and for model validation. As a direct result of this work, it became 211u001eapparent that possible Defense Program (DP) uses for batteries based on this cell 211u001echemistry existed. A larger effort aimed at mapping the performance envelope of 211u001ethis chemistry was initiated in order to assess the practicality of this cell 211u001echemistry, not only for DP applications, but also for other uses. The work 211u001eperformed included an evaluation of the cell performance as a function of a 211u001enumber of variables, including cell size, manufacturer, current, pulse loads, 211u001econstant current loads, safety, etc. In addition, the development of new 211u001eevaluation techniques that would apply to any battery system, such as those 211u001erelated to reliability assessments began. This report describes the results of 211u001ethese evaluations.
