Star silicon vertex tracker: a large area silicon drift detector

The STAR-SVT (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC-Silicon Vertex Tracker) is a three211u001ebarrel microvertex detector based upon silicon drift detector technology. As 211u001edesigned for the STAR-SVT, silicon drift detectors (SDD's) are capable of 211u001eproviding unambiguous two dimensional hit position measurements with resolutions 211u001eon the order of 20 pm in each coordinate. Achievement of such resolutions, 211u001eparticularly in the drift direction coordinate, depends upon certain 211u001echaracteristics of silicon and drift detector geometry that are uniquely critical 211u001efor silicon drift detectors hit measurements. Here we describe features of the 211u001edesign of the STAR-SVT SDD's and the front-end electronics that are motivated by 211u001esuch characteristics.
