The River Protection Project Waste Treatment Plant (RPP-WTP) (1996) flow sheet211u001euses cross-flow filtration as the solid/liquid separation technique. Unlike 211u001etraditional dead-end filtration, which has a declining rate caused by the growth 211u001eof a filter cake on the surface of the filter medium, in cross-flow filtration, 211u001ethe filter cake is swept away by the fluid flowing across it. This filtration 211u001emethod is especially beneficial when there are very fine particles and when 211u001esystem simplicity is required. The objective of this work was to test cross-flow 211u001efiltration using actual Envelope A Hanford tank waste. Similar to the Phase 1A 211u001estudy, they evaluated the permeability of an Envelope A feed through a single 211u001eelement filter as a function of transmembrane pressure, axial velocity, solids 211u001econcentration, and time. In addition, the efficiency of back pulse and chemical 211u001ecleaning on the filter performance was evaluated. The chemical and radiochemical 211u001ecomposition of the filtrate and solids was measured to determine efficiency of 211u001ethe filtration process. This report describes the test apparatus, the 211u001eexperimental approach, the results of the tests, and the chemical and 211u001eradiochemical analysis for supernatants taken from Hanford Tank AW-101. This 211u001ereport also provides a means of transmitting to British Nuclear Fuels, Limited 211u001e(BNFL) the completed test instruction and raw filtration and analytical data.
