In this paper, we summarize the rationale for an advanced system called211u001eDiagnostics-While-Drilling (DWD) and describe its benefits, preliminary 211u001econfiguration, and essential characteristics. The central concept is a closed 211u001edata circuit in which downhole sensors collect information and send it to the 211u001esurface via a high-speed data link, where it is combined with surface 211u001emeasurements and processed through drilling advisory software. The driller then 211u001euses this information to adjust the drilling process, sending control signals 211u001eback downhole with real-time knowledge of their effects on performance. We 211u001eoutline a Program Plan for DOE, university, and industry to cooperate in the 211u001edevelopment of DWD technology.
