The research supported by this grant sought to understand how proteins required211u001efor photosynthesis in green algae and higher plants are made, and to understand 211u001ehow the synthesis of these proteins is regulated. The principal goal of the 211u001eproject was to identify nuclear genes whose products are required for the 211u001esynthesis of chloroplast-encoded photosynthetic proteins, and to determine how 211u001ethese nuclear gene products function in the organelle. We focused our work on the 211u001esynthesis of an important photosystem II protein called D2. This protein is 211u001erequired for electron transfer reactions within photosystem II and for oxygen 211u001eevolution. D2 is encoded by a chloroplast gene called psbD.
