The thermal conductivity and structural properties of polycrystalline and single211u001ecrystal semiconductor type-1 germanium clathrates are reported. Germanium 211u001eclathrates exhibit thermal conductivities that are typical of amorphous 211u001ematerials. This behavior occurs in spite of their well-defined crystalline 211u001estructure. The authors employ temperature dependent neutron diffraction data in 211u001einvestigating the displacements of the caged strontium atoms in Sr(sub 8)Ga(sub 211u001e16)Ge(sub 30) and their interaction with the polyhedral cages that entrap them. 211u001eTheir aim is to investigate the correlation between the structural properties and 211u001ethe low, glass-like thermal conductivity observed in this compound.
