The Freiser group pioneered the study of metal/organic and organometallic ion211u001echemistry in the gas phase. As they frequently pointed out, the importance of 211u001ethis work was not restricted to mass spectrometry, but lay in the insights it 211u001eprovides into chemistry in other environments. A lasting monument to that work is 211u001ethe body of knowledge that now exists on the activation of C-H and C-C bonds by 211u001emetal ions.
