The influence of oxygenated hydrocarbons as additives to diesel fuels on211u001eignition, NO x emissions and soot production has been examined using a detailed 211u001echemical kinetic reaction mechanism. N-heptane was used a representative diesel 211u001efuel, and methanol, dimethyl ether and dimethoxymethane were used as oxygenated 211u001efuel additives. It was found that addition of oxygenated hydrocarbons reduced NO 211u001ex levels and reduced the production of soot precursors. When the overall oxygen 211u001econtent in the fuel reached approximately 25% by mass, production of soot 211u001eprecursors fell effectively to zero, in agreement with experimental studies. The 211u001ekinetic factors responsible for these observation are discussed.
