A calculational and experimental study was undertaken to determine whether aliquid metal could be used as a heat source for the pyrolysis of methane to carbon and hydrogen. The thermodynamics and energetic for production of hydrogen by methane pyrolysis, followed by generation of electricity in a fuel cell, were determined to be favorable. The financial penalty from the sequestration of carbon is only about $100 per ton of carbon produced. Substitution of this process for combustion of natural gas by a turbine would make a major contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
