Annual Report of Waste Generation and Pollution Prevention Progress 2000

This ninth edition of the Annual Report of Waste Generation and Pollution Prevention Progress highlights waste reduction, pollution prevention accomplishments, and cost savings/avoidance for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Pollution Prevention Program for Fiscal Year 2000. This edition marks the first time that progress toward meeting the 2005 Pollution Prevention Goals, issued by the Secretary of Energy in November 1999, is being reported. In addition, the Annual Report has a new format, and now contains information on a fiscal year basis, which is consistent with other DOE reports. DOE made significant progress toward its goals in Fiscal Year 2000, as it continues to reduce waste generation from routine operations and cleanup activities. As a follow-up to the success of meeting the 1996 Secretarial Goals, the Department has issued more ambitious goals to be achieved by 2005 and 2010. These goals include waste reductions from routine operations and environmental restoration activities, purchases of energy/environmentally-preferable products, reductions for ozone depleting substances and greenhouse gases, and measures to increase vehicle fleet efficiency and use of alternative fuels. These goals were developed to go beyond compliance, and demonstrate DOE's commitment and leadership within the Federal government toward environment stewardship and responsibility. DOE is currently analyzing plans submitted by its sites and facilities addressing resource requirements needed to achieve these aggressive goals.
