Electrons and X rays dissociate water through ionization into oxidizing and reducing fragments, which probably have the formulas OH and H. In the absence of any solute, the fragments recombine and no net reaction occurs. If any oxidizable or reducible substances is dissolved in the water, it will react with the fragments, becoming oxidized or reduced. Thus, oxygen dissolved in the water is reduced to hydrogen peroxide;and ferrous, arsenate and other reducing ions are oxidized with the formation of an equivalent amount of hydrogen gas.
