A STUDY OF CONTINUOUS EXTRACTION METHODS

The experiments and distribution curves hereinafter described indicate that the most desirable extraction conditions are obtained by using a feed liquor which contains both an excess of nitric acid and a salting out agent such as calcium nitrate and a solvent containing nitric acid. Under these conditions the equilibrium curve turns sharply upward from the origin and maintains a fairly steep slope which considerably reduces the number of theoretical plates required to attain the degree of "hex" extraction desired. The use of sodium nitrate as a salting-out agent was not satisfactory and indeed the slope of the distribution curve in this instance was not improved.
