Temperatures In the Bottom Thermal Shield Proposed for the Materials Testing Reactor

Estimated temperatures are reported for the bottom thermal shield of the MTR, designed as- sketched in Figure 1 of this memorandum, with the reactor operating at a power of 60,000 kw with a 3. kg loading. By modifying the design slightly, it is possible to prevent the maximum temperature in the steel from exceeding the air temperature by more than 150℉. The maximum temperature in the steel adjacent to the concrete is found to be less than 70℉ warmer than the air and that in the steel upon which the graphite supports rest should not be more than 50℉ above the air temperature.
