It will be noted that the progress reports from this contract have not been issued on a regular quarterly basis. Instead, we have followed the practice of presenting the results of experimental studies only when a given phase is completed or when definite patterns have been established and conclusions may be drawn. The various sections of this report are therefore presented in the form of regular papers, written by the persons who conducted the experiments described, each being subjected to critical review by other members of the project staff.
