This large number of stations, located at distances up to 10 miles in various directions from the center of the site, would entail a serious expenditure of manpower unless they were fully automatic in operation and required only infrequent visits for collection of records The ultimate objective was to provide equipment that would not require servicing more often than once a week, so that it could be maintained and serviced by a single crew making the rounds of all the stations After numerous difficulties, this goal was achieved with considerable success.nThe interval of one week was chosen as the averaging time in setting up tentative design limits on the radiation dosage, and records were kept on a weekly basis. The object was not to exceed 1 percent of the "tolerance dose" at any point off the Laboratory site or 10 percent of the tolerance on the site, when dose rate was averaged over a week.
