Acceptance of the results obtained in the extrusion of Zircaloy 1 as an evaluation of the Ugine-Sejournet Process is felt unwarranted. While the unique feature of the technique, i.e., the use of glass as a lubricant, should be considered favorably, it is felt that billet heating in molten salt is an important requisite of the process. This conclusion is derived from the temperature characteristics of the glasses and enameling frit used, shown in Figure 7.nAs indicated by this display, the adherence of the enameling frit to zirconium appears poor. It is probable, therefore, that in heating the billets the frit flaked off exposing the Zircaloy 1 to oxidation. Only the glass blanket used to envelope the billet before loading appears to have wet the oxidized zirconium surface and attained a fluidity which would enhance its effectiveness as a lubricant at billet temperature.
