This report consists of a compilation of the material presented in a series of 16 lectures given during the months of October, November and December to members of the ARC Research Group and other staff members of UCRL Livermore. The lectures dealt primarily with the theory of operation of a proposed thermonuclear reactor using the so-called "magnetic mirror" principle. Because of the specialized nature of the topics pre¬sented a few words of introduction and of history, relating these topics to the general field of controlled thermonuclear reaction physics, are innorder.nAt the kinetic temperature (10 8to 10 9 degrees Kelvin) whichnmust be contemplated in order to achieve a self-sustaining controlled thermonuclear reaction, all matter is essentially completely ionized and exists only as a "plasma" of ionized atoms and an equal number, charge-wise, of free electrons.
