THE WELDING OF TYPE 347 STEELS Weld Qualification Tests on Modified Type 347 Welding Electrodes

Five Type 347 electrode compositions and a Type 308L composition were subjected to a series of qualification tests to ascertain their commercial usability. Three of the electrode compositions gave weld deposits which were completely austenitic. Two partially ferritic electrodes, representing standard Type 347 compositions were included for comparison. The sixth was a non-columbium Type 308L electrode having a nominal ferrite content.nThe tests involved overlay welds, fillet welds in all positions, a restrained butt weld, and a simulated horizontal fixed position pipe weld. Though all electrodes were found commercially usable, the partially ferritic Type 347 electrodes gave the most uniform and reliable performance.
