The use of infra-red spectrometry for the determination of the D20 content of heavy water has been investigated Double beam differential absorption methods have been found suitable for analyzing samples having D2O concentrations greater than 99.5% or less than 1%. The infra-red spectrometric method is faster than current mass spectrometric methods. In the high D2O concentration range, the precision of infra-red spectrometry is several times greater than that of mass spectrometry. In the low D2O concentration range, the precision of the infra-red spectrometry is comparable to that of mass spectrometry.
