Carburized and cold-worked single crystals of iron were irradiated at room temperature to a total integrated flux of 1018 nvt to determine the effect of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties of iron crystals hardened by other means prior to irradiation. The results presented show that the effect of solute atom hardening plus irradiation hardening can be described as an additive process;in contrast, the hardening effect of irradiation decreases with increasing amounts of cold work. The data have been interpreted on the basis of defect agglomerates of vacancies and interstitial atoms produced during collision events.
