During the period under review efforts were concentrated on two projects, namely, development of a standard multiplier in combination with a "multi-alkali" photocathode of low thermionic emission and design of a high-speed, high-current multiplier structure with central accelerating electrode.nPart I describes experiments dealing with the effect of "multi-alkali" activation on the gain factor of dynodes and first results obtained with complete "multialkali" photomultipliers.
