Three topics are reported on: effects temperature and pressure on the screening demands of cations (thermal expansion of alkali halides, and glasses under high pressure), atomistic interpretation of the hardness of simple compounds, and theoretical strength of brittle solids as affected by the polarization of constituent ions.
