A study of hardness vs composition for zirconium binaiy alloys containing Nb, Cr, Mn, Th or V water quenched from the β field strongly suggests the presence of omega phase in several instances. Embrittlement would be anticipated. Time-temperature-transformation curves and hardness as a function of transformation have been determined for alloys containing 7 and 15% N b. The data collected in this study are interpreted as proof of transition phase embrittlement. It is felt that a firm foundation has been laid for a definitive study of transition phase in zirconium eutectoid alloys.
