THE SOLID SOLUBILITY OF URANIUM IN THORIUM AND THE ALLOTROPIC TRANSFORMATION OF THORIUM-URANIUM ALLOYS

High-temperature X-ray diffraction studies were conducted with thorium-uranium alloys with up to 10 w/o uranium. The solid solubility of uranium in thorium as a function of temperature was determined by the method of lattice parameters. Thorium will dissolve up to 2.S w/o uranium at 950 C, 4.5 w/o at 1150 C, and 7.5 w/o at 1250 C.nDeterminations were made of the temperature of the transition of thorium and of the effect of uranium upon the transition. The alpha-to beta transition for thorium was observed to occur at 1330 +20 C.
