Study of a Method for Filtering Optical Images

The theory of image formation by the method of Fourier analysis is reviewed briefly. Then a procedure is described with which an arbitrary linear transformation can be performed on the image when it is recorded photographically. Next, the conditions under which one must work to minimize distortion resulting from the recording are studied. Finally, experimental equipment, fabrication, and testing of frequency filters are discussed, along with results on improvement of the contrast and sharpness of photographic prints. 10 figures.
