A method of calculating the attainable burn-up of uranium is developed which readily takes into account any departures from the ideal of returning all the plutonium. The analysis is applic¬able only to the equilibrium condition when a steady state of recycling has been attained. It is shown that whereas an optimum assignment of-parameters was made for starting up the ANL 1000 MW D2O boiling reactor with natural uranium,.a greater burn-up of natural uranium would be attainable by reducing the resonance escape factor from 0.8364 to about 0.70. This, however, necessi-tates carrying a greater proportion of fissile material through¬out the fuel cycle.
