By installing a Kantar furnace inside the pressure vessel, in place of the external heating mantle, the operating temperature of the vessel -was increased from 570°C to 1200°C« This higher operating temperature enabled the successful hot isostatic bonding of various materials such as Zircaloy-2 to 8 w/o uranium-zirconium;Zircaloy-2 to 10 w/o niobium-uranium;^Nichrome to 35 w/o U02~niobium;40 w/o titanium-niobium to 30 w/o U02~niobium;and aluminum to 20 w/o uranium-aluminum. A limited study was made of the bond strength of type 347 stainless steel in which the process variables, such as pressure, temperature and time, were varied. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the processing conditions of 1200°C, 12,000 psi for 20 minutes exceed the minimum conditions required for good bonding.
