CARBON STEEL FOR THE HANFORD NEW PRODUCTION REACTOR

A comprehensive program at HAPO has been directed toward obtaining and evaluating appropriate technology to establish the feasibility of using carbon steel as the primary material for fabrication of the NPR coolant system. The principle sources of information for these studies have been the KAPL, the Bettis Plant, the Westinghouse Atomic Power Laboratory, the Naval Research Facilities in Idaho, and the Hanford Laboratories. Detailed discussions have been made with knowledgeable personnel at each of these plants.nExperience from the HAPO recirculation loops and the naval reactors indicates as a result of corrosion and film deposition that activity does build¬up on the loop components and that its removal is necessary for efficient maintenance operations.
