INVESTIGATION OF MATERIALS FOR USE IN A HEAT TRANSFER SYSTEM CONTAINING LIQUID LEAD OR BISMUTH

The two major difficulties encountered were due to analytical troubles and to precipitation and segregation which occured in the liquid lead. Analytical troubles were caused by the presence of a large amount of lead which interferred with the procedures worked out previously for bismuth (l). Standard, spectrographs procedure were found inadequate for the extremely low concentrations of iron and chromium which were found in lead. This problem was solved by the development of a special spectrographs method by which sufficiently reliable measurements could be made. The troubles caused by precipitation and segregation of iron and chromium in the liquid lead have not been solved.
