The work of this committee was originally concerned with the study of varying compositions of Type 347 weld metal with a view towards finding one or more that were l) free from weld metal cracks, 2) suitable for corrosion resisting applications, 3) free from embrittlement when sub¬jected to elevated temperatures either during heat treatment or in service, 4) suitable for strength applications in elevated temperature service.nThe result of the first few years of testing confirmed the fact that weld metal cracking was clearly a function of ferrite content. We also con¬firmed the fact that at least in columbium-bearing alloys ferrite became embrittled when exposed to elevated temperatures.
