EQUIPMENT FOR MEASUREMENT OF INTERNAL TEMPERATURES IN SCREW REACTORS

Uranium dioxide is produced in large screw type reactors by contacting uranium trioxide with hydrogen at elevated temperatures. The temperature of the system is a critical variable and is difficult to determine due to physical arrangement of the equipment. The use of sheathed thermocouples, and the use of a mercury commutator for transmitting small electrical signals from a rotating member to stationary contacts, have permitted the recording of internal reactor temperatures while the reaction was being carried out.
