We present here an outline of this thesis, which is concerned with an experiment that formed part of the M. I.T. air shower investigations carried out at Harvard University's Agassiz Station, Harvard, Massachusetts. The main purpose of the experiment was the determination of the size (total number of particles) and zenith-angle distribution at sea level of extensive air showers having sizes ranging from 5 x 10 particles to about 3 x 106 particles.nThe experimental apparatus consisted of an array of 15 large scintillation detectors, which were distributed over an area of 40 acres, and the associated electronics and recording equipment. The information obtained from these detectors when an air shower was recorded con¬sisted of measured values of particle densities at various locations in the plane of the shower, and the corresponding arrival times of the shower particles at the respective detectors.
