EXPERIMENT EVALUATION OF A CONCENTRIC-CYLINDER, SPIRAL-FLOW HEAT EXCHANGER

An experimental evaluation was made of a 100-kw model of a concentriccylinder, countercurrent, spiral-flow heat exchanger to determine its applica¬bility in sodium cooled reactor systems. The heat exchanger underwent a rigid program of rapid thermal transients, and the unit demonstrated a satis¬factory resistance to thermal stresses. Heat transfer tests also were conducted, and expressions were developed for the liquid metal Nusselt numbers associated with two general heat transfer conditions for the essentially rectangular cross sections of the fluid passages.
