Alternate Methods of Removing Radio-Halogens from Air Streams.

Since initiation of the project, the water scrubbing halogen removal method has been abandoned in favor of a ''dry'' process which would be installed as a third filter bank following the prefilter and absolute filter banks in the decontamination facilities. Based on laboratory data of three such ''dry'' processes, a development program has been initiated to evaluate, on pilot scale, the iodine removal efficiencies, loading capacities, and flow engineering data of standard air filter size halogen collector units fabricated to specifications prepared from the laboratory data of these processes. The removal efficiencies of the processes, as measured in the laboratory from bench type experiments, were in the 95 to 99 percent range. It is anticipated the data obtained from the pilot tests will provide sufficient information to install one or a combination of processes in the decontamination facilities which will provide adequate protection. However, a review of the known halogen removal processes in use in nuclear plants or demonstrated successfully in the laboratory has been made in event a supplementary system is required. 37 refs., 1 fig., 1 tab.
