Several experiments on ion bombardment of metals have been performed in an attempt to find an experimental method which would give the ranges of ions in metals. The techniques used for measurements in quarts are not applicable because the penetration depth of the light in metals is only a small fraction of the ion penetration. In addition, reflection coefficient measurements are complicated by the surface roughness produced by sputtering of the metal atoms.
