This report consists of three papers on the subject of the use of beams of thermal neutrons for studying the solid state, given at a colloquium on November 26th, 1958. The purpose of this colloquium was to acquaint X-ray diffraction workers in the Authority with progress and techniques in a complementary field to their own. The papers are now published in the present form with the thought that they may be of interest to a wider circle of readers.
