HANFORD NEPTUNIUM OXALATE-OXIDE PROCESS EXPERIENCE

A satisfactory neptunium oxalate process has been developed for the final purification of Hanford anion exchange product and Its conversion to neptunium(IV) oxide. In the process which appears best adapted for routine operation, neptunium(IV) oxalate was precipitated by the direct addition of the anion exchange product, containing 15-20 grams/liter neptunium nitrate solution [> 99％ neptunium(IV)] to an oxalic acid-nitric acid mixture. The reagent volumes and concentrations were adjusted to give a final 6lurry of about 0.1M oxalic acid and about 2.0 M nitric acid.
