The chemical properties of Rochelle salt and its value in medicine have "been recognized ever since it was first produced, in 1672, by Pierre de la Seignette, an apothecary of La Rochelle on the coast of France. However, it was not until 1880 that its remarkable physical properties were observed when the Curie brothers included it in their first studies of the piezoelectric effect.
