THE PREPARATION OF METAL GRADE UF4 FROM SCRAP BY THE WINLO PROCESS

An amine extraction flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory which will purify low-grade MgF2-type scrap sufficiently for precipitation of metal-grade UF4 by the Winlo aqueous precipitation process. An alternative scrap treatment process, the currently used UAP precipitation, was found to give sufficient purification so that the UAP could be dissolved in hydrochloric acid and metal-grade UF4 precipitated from this solution by the Winlo process.nSeveral of the high-grade black-oxide scrap streams were found to be suffi¬ciently pure to be amenable to a hydrochloric acid dissolution-aqueous UF4 precipitation process without prior purification.
