The possibility of preparing pure yttrium fluoride by:reacting yttrium oxide with ammonium bifluoride, NH4F- HF (ammonium acid fluoride), has been investigated. The main advantages of t his method and, therefore, the principal reasons for studying the reaction are:(1) this method of preparing pure yttrium fluoride would eliminate the difficult handling problems involved with the us e of anhydrous hydrofluoric acid and (2) the process could be scaled up for large scale production quite easily.
