INTERIM REPORT ON INVESTIGATION OF DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF RELAYS

An investigation was made on two groups of relays of the same general type (crystal can) but of different designs and production techniques. The purpose was to see if an evaluation of these two different designs and production methods was feasable by use of transient characteristics. The transient coil current was recorded along with the contact voltage for each relay. This leads to two groups of records from which the operate time, transit time, contact chatter, and release time was available for each relay. From these records, the design was reflected in the general shape of the coil currents. The production process was reflected in the deviation among the same type relays. It was found that the designs were apparently quite different. The control of adjustments, however, was the most noticeable difference. One group of relays apparently had good adjustment control while the other a much less quality of adjustment.
