This was to be operated in three parts. The initial recovery from the ethereal sludge, comprising the separation of uranium and protactinium, was to be carried out at Springfields but little concentration of the protactinium was attempted at this stage because of the health hazard. A further purification and concentration stage was to be carried out at Windscale, while the final purification, concentration and dispensing were to be done at Harwell.nThe authors spent four months on out station duty assisting Springfields staff in the initial recovery of protactinium and this report describes the work done during this stage of the processing.
