A PRECISION RELAY PULSE GENERATOR FOR USE WITH PULSE AMPLITUDE ANALYSERS

The performance demanded of present-day pulse height analysers is such that a pulse generator providing an accurately known and stable output is essential both at the development stage and for routine checking and maintenance. Several pulse generators(1,2) employing mercury-contact relays have been developed for this purpose, principally in North America where this type of relay first became available, and they have given satisfactory service for a number of years. The present report describes a similar instrument recently designed at Harwell (pulse Generator 1451), which embodies certain improvements. The philosophy of design is considered and details given of the theory underlying various aspects of the circuit operation. These have been verified by observation where possible.
