The simplest case is that in which the system is deterministic, and the bulbs and buttons are equal in number and connected in a one-one fashion. Then, once the correspondence between bulbs and buttons is known, the receiver can state with certainty which button was pushed, on the basis of which bulb lights up. A second case, equally simple, is that in which there is one more button than bulb, two of the buttons are connected to some one bulb, and then the remaining buttons and bulbs are connected in a one-one fashion. Now the receiver can state with certainty which button was pushed, except when that bulb which is connected to two buttons lights up. However, the trans¬mitter and receiver may decide among themselves that, of the two buttons which light the same bulb, one will never be pushed.
